Financial Literacy Nobody Taught You
The money basics every man needs to know to stop bleeding cash.

Financial Literacy Nobody Taught You
Your father did not explain money to you because he did not know. Your school did not explain it because they were busy teaching you the parts of a cell. The guy who signed you up for your first credit card at eighteen explained it just enough to lock you in. Now you are thirty-four and your paycheck disappears before it lands.
This is not a math problem. It is a knowledge problem. And the knowledge was hidden on purpose.
The Men Who Profited From Your Confusion
The payday loan store on the corner of your block is not a bank. It is a trap with a neon sign. The dealership that put you in a truck at 21 percent knew exactly what that monthly payment would do to your budget over six years. The landlord who took your deposit and did not return it counted on you not knowing you could fight it. The check cashing place charging you four percent to get your own money counted on you not having a bank account yet.

Get StartedNone of them are evil in a cartoon way. They are just businesses that run on the ignorance nobody corrected. Your confusion was their revenue. The day you stop being confused is the day their quarterly numbers take a hit. That is the real reason this was never on a classroom wall.
The Notebook On The Truck Dash
Before you budget anything, you need to see where the money is going. Not guess. See. For thirty days you keep a small notebook on the dash of your truck. Every dollar out, you write it down. Gas. Coffee. The hot pocket at 11 PM. The lottery ticket. The kid's school fee. The Amazon purchase you forgot about at 1 AM.
You are not going to like the list. That is the point. Most men find between forty and ninety dollars a month bleeding out of holes they did not know existed. Subscriptions renewing on cards they forgot about. A daily habit that adds up to three hundred dollars by month end.
Write it down until it hurts. Then fix the top three leaks before you do anything else. That alone will save you more money than any investing tip you read online.
The Envelope And The Boots
Forget apps for a minute. Do this with your hands.
Cash your check. Take out four envelopes. Label them. Rent. Food. Gas. Saved. Put the rent money in first. The food money second. The gas money third. Whatever is left goes in the saved envelope. Even if it is seven dollars. Seven dollars is not a joke. Seven dollars is proof you have a seat at the table now.
When the food envelope is empty on Thursday, you do not eat out Friday. You cook the rice and beans you already bought. When the gas envelope is light, you do not take the scenic route to work. You take the interstate.
This is not cute. This is a man who used to spend forty dollars a weekend on beer learning that forty dollars in an envelope labeled "saved" will change his kid's sixteenth birthday six years from now. You feel the money in a way a debit card will never let you feel it.
Credit Scores Are A Game With Rules
Your credit score is not your worth. It is a three-digit number a bank uses to decide if lending you money is risky. That is the whole thing. But that number decides your rent, your insurance, sometimes your job.
Two rules run the game.
Pay on time. Every time. Even the minimum. A payment that is 31 days late can drop your score 80 points and sit on your report for seven years. That is the single most expensive mistake you can make. Set up auto-pay for at least the minimum on every card you have. Then fight to pay more when you can.
Keep your balance under 30 percent of the limit. If your card has a 500 dollar limit, never carry more than 150 on it. The day you max a card is the day the system decides you are desperate, and desperate men are risky, so desperate men get charged more.
If you have no credit at all, get a secured card. You put down 200 dollars. That becomes your limit. Use it for the gas you were already buying. Pay it off every month. In six months you have a score. In twelve months you have options.
Gig Taxes Will Wreck You If You Let Them
If you drive DoorDash or Uber or you do side work for cash, you are self-employed. That means no one took taxes out. The IRS still wants them. Every dollar you make on the side, put 25 to 30 percent of it in a separate account the moment it lands. Do not touch it. When April hits, you write a check instead of opening a letter you cannot answer.
Track every mile you drive for work. Every dollar you spent on tools, phone bill, gas, supplies. Those come off the top before the tax is calculated. A notebook in the glove box with dates and miles is worth hundreds of dollars to you at tax time. Most men skip this and donate that money to the government by accident.
The Five Hundred Dollar Wall
Five hundred dollars in an account you do not touch is the wall between a bad week and a bad year.
Your serpentine belt snaps on the interstate. Without the wall, that is a missed shift, a short check, a late rent, a late fee, a fight with your wife, a night spent in a chair not sleeping. With the wall, it is a tow, a repair, a long Saturday, a normal Monday.
Build it ten dollars a week if that is all you have. Sell the tool you do not use. The old game console. The bike that has been in the garage for two years. Every dollar goes in the wall until the wall hits five hundred. Then you start on the next wall. A thousand. Three thousand. One month of expenses. Three months of expenses.
You are not trying to get rich. You are trying to build enough distance between you and disaster that the next punch does not put you on the ground.
Scripture
The wise store up choice food and olive oil, but fools gulp theirs down.
(Proverbs 21:20, NIV)Notice what God put next to wisdom. Not a mansion. Not a crown. Food and oil stored up. The quiet, boring discipline of setting something aside when you did not have to. The foolish man eats every dollar as it hits his hand. The wise man puts something in the envelope before the food hits the plate. That is the whole difference, and it compounds for forty years.
Reflect
1. Pull out a receipt from yesterday. What did you spend that you would not spend again if you could rewind it?
2. What is the three-digit number on your credit report right now. If you do not know, when are you going to pull it.
3. Where is the first envelope going. What label are you writing on it tonight.
This is just the beginning.
